At Power Plants, the Hands Behind the Scenes Move Before the Big Generators Do

When people talk about the power industry, they usually start with KEPCO, KHNP, and the state-owned generation companies. Fair enough. But power plants do not run on nameplates alone. You only see the real picture when you go deeper—who designed them, who built them, who keeps them from going down, and which valves, fittings, and control devices are holding up the inside. Whether it is Shin Hanul, Dukovany in the Czech Republic, or i-SMR, on the ground it is ultimately the hands of B2B companies that move first.

There is also a clear reason these companies matter more now. If the so-called nuclear renaissance is not going to end as an empty slogan, then design capability, construction capability, maintenance capability, and a domestic equipment supply chain all have to mesh as one. The same goes for localization in power plant maintenance. Overseas exports, too, are ultimately built on trust in each individual component, each control device, and each cycle of planned preventive maintenance. Their names may be less well known, but this is the side that actually keeps power plants running.

Who Builds Power Plants — EPC & Design (7 companies)

The export competitiveness of nuclear and power plants ultimately comes when KEPCO E&C’s design capabilities and the on-site execution of lead EPC contractors like Hyundai E&C and Daewoo E&C move as one. KEPCO E&C is the only company in Korea capable of full-scope nuclear plant design (NSSS+BOP), and it has also long been a core player in thermal power design. Its track record on overseas projects like Barakah and El Dabaa is no coincidence. On top of that, Hyundai E&C handles combined-cycle, nuclear, and offshore wind EPC, and serves as the lead nuclear construction contractor for Barakah and Bulgaria. Daewoo E&C is also active in LNG liquefaction, combined-cycle, and nuclear plant EPC, and is the lead construction contractor for Shin-Wolsong and the Dukovany project in the Czech Republic. Who Keeps Power Plants Running — Maintenance & MRO (14 companies)

The real barrier to entry in the power industry is not the ability to build, but the ability to keep plants from stopping—and at the center of that are KEPCO KPS and private-sector maintenance and control specialists. KEPCO KPS is the country’s largest operator, handling comprehensive maintenance and scheduled preventive maintenance for thermal, nuclear, and hydro generation facilities, as well as transmission and substation equipment. Iljin Power goes beyond maintenance of nuclear and thermal power mechanical equipment into nuclear EPC and chemical equipment manufacturing. On the ground, these overlapping capabilities are more formidable than they look.

Go deeper into nuclear, and the weight shifts sharply toward control systems and inspection. Woori Technology is the only domestic supplier of non-safety MMIS/distributed control systems (DCS) for nuclear plants, with its name attached to Shin Hanul Units 1–4, Shin Kori Units 5–6, and i-SMR. Soosan ENS handles nuclear safety-system MMIS and owns POSAFE-Q, the only domestically available safety-grade control device. Woojin Entec specializes in maintenance and commissioning of instrumentation and control equipment for nuclear and thermal power plants, while Orbitech is responsible for in-service inspection (ISI), non-destructive testing, and radiation management at nuclear plants. In nuclear and power exports, the final contest is decided by localization and supply reliability for equipment such as fittings, valves, heat exchangers, actuators, and turbine parts. Even a single pipeline run brings in heavyweights in pipe fittings like Sungkwang Bend and Taekwang. Sungkwang Bend is Korea’s No. 1 in welded pipe fittings, while Taekwang stands alongside it as one of the two dominant players in forged and welded pipe fittings for industrial plants and shipbuilding. Move down to the instrumentation line and names like Hy-Lok, BMT, and DK-Lok appear. Hy-Lok’s position is especially clear in instrumentation fittings, valves, and tube fittings, with a strong track record in nuclear localization and a place among the global top three. What to Watch Going Forward

The key thing to watch from here is not simply how many more nuclear reactors get built. What matters is how tightly the ecosystem comes together when domestic projects like Shin Hanul continue: KEPCO E&C on design, Hyundai E&C and Daewoo E&C on construction, maintenance systems led by KEPCO KPS and Soosan Industry, MMIS from Woori Technology and Soosan ENS, and equipment suppliers such as Chokwang ILI, Enertork, Hy-Lok, and Sungkwang Bend. Whether it is Dukovany in the Czech Republic or an SMR project, overseas clients ultimately evaluate the sustainability of the entire supply chain. Is strong EPC execution alone enough? Not really. If maintenance and parts supply become unstable, trust falls apart quickly.

That is why I see the real competitive strength of Korea’s power and generation industry today not in the earnings tables of the large utilities, but in the accumulated capabilities of these B2B companies. Localizing power plant maintenance is not just a cost-cutting story; it is much closer to a question of operational sovereignty. And exporting equipment is not merely about selling individual components, but about extending the Korean-style power generation ecosystem. It does not matter if these names are less well known. What matters is that the market now needs to distinguish them more precisely: the companies that build, the companies that keep plants running, and the companies that supply the critical parts. A power plant runs for the long haul only when all three are strong at the same time.
